Anna Smith (PhD, NYU) is an Associate Professor and Provost Fellow at Illinois State University, following an Institute of Education Sciences postdoctoral fellowship in writing and new learning ecologies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
She is co-author of Developing Writers: Teaching and Learning in the Digital Age (Open University Press), and a co-editor of the Handbook of Writing, Literacies, and Education in Digital Cultures (Routledge). The author of more than 40 articles, book chapters, and other manuscripts, her award-winning peer-reviewed research can be found in journals such as Learning, Culture & Social Interaction, Theory Into Practice, Journal of Literacy Research, Pedagogies: An International Journal, and English Teaching: Practice and Critique.
Dr. Smith is the current lead co-editor of the Literacy Research Association’s Literacy Research: Theory, Method, and Practice. Her research has been recognized with the 2018 Arthur Applebee Award for Excellence in Research on Literacy from the Literacy Research Association and University at Albany, SUNY, the 2023 Emerald Literati Award for Most Outstanding Article, and the 2025 Divergent Award for Excellence in Research on Literacy in a Digital Age from the Initiative for Literacy in a Digital Age.
She has served on the executive board of the National Council of Research on Language and Literacy and is a past chair of the American Educational Research Association’s Writing and Literacies special interest group.
