On August 25, 2026, Illinois received its long-awaited Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program approval from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This approval marks nearly one year since Illinois submitted its Final Proposal on September 30, 2025, which followed Illinois’ facilitation of a restructured and truncated subgrantee selection process to align with the federal government’s June 2026 BEAD Restructuring Policy Notice.

“It is deeply rewarding to see this proposal finally approved so we can move into implementation and achieve universal, affordable access for all,” said Shubhika Agarwal, assistant director for broadband data & GeoAnalytics and IBL’s principal data scientist. “The cooperation from our communities and internet service providers throughout this entire process has been incredible.”

In the coming weeks, the Illinois Office of Broadband (IOB) is ready and excited to formally launch its historic $1+ billion BEAD Program, which will connect more than 142,000 homes, businesses, and community anchor institutions to broadband over the next five years. A map of projects is available at illinoisbead.org.

This journey began with the launch of the new FCC National Broadband Maps, where we worked through the initial challenge process to accurately represent our unserved and underserved locations and secure our state allocation,” Agarwal continued. “It has been a monumental effort ever since.”

Illinois now awaits its Notice of Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which will initiate the six-month timeline for Illinois to execute all grant agreements with awardees. In the meantime, the IOB is finalizing program guidance, processes, and orientation materials in preparation to formally on-board its 23 internet service provider grantees this fall, including preliminary program guidance and final subgrantee selection process information.

“Access to reliable broadband is not only critical to Illinois’ economic development, but also essential to tackling the digital divide across the state,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “This funding will support the continued efforts of Connect Illinois to ensure all Illinoisans have the digital access needed to actively participate and thrive in the state’s modern economy.”

The funding will connect approximately 350,000 residents through homes, businesses, and community institutions across Illinois by 2031. Between private investment, prior public funding, and new BEAD funding, the total broadband investment will exceed $2 billion.
